Public Library Design Proposal

This is a speculative project based on a real site and also serves to demonstrate our ability to deal with a variety of scales and complex building programs in an urban setting. The building form takes its ordinance from an ecological constraint to preserve existing mature trees on the site, essentially stepping the building in and out to derive the form.

The opportunities presented through this approach result in a façade that lends itself very well to the intended use through the profusion of natural lighting thus reducing the reliance on electricity as well as improving the indoor environment. A strategically located top lit atrium houses the central circulation stair and bathes it with natural light. The stacks are centrally located thus liberating the perimeter for reading areas to maximize the use of daylighting as well as views to Spring Garden Road and Queen Street.
