House 17

House 17, known as the “slice-house,” is a newly built residence designed for a young family in the serene Swansea-High Park neighborhood of south-west Toronto. Nestled on a ravine lot, the home integrates seamlessly with the natural landscape, benefiting from minimal traffic and enhanced privacy. The architectural concept emphasizes fluid, interconnected living spaces that maximize natural light through a linear array of skylights, which span two and a half storeys. An open-plan layout fosters a strong connection to the outdoors, while a sculptural “origami” staircase serves as a central design feature, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.

The exterior of the slice-house showcases bold, modern elements, including a cantilevered wing that shelters outdoor decks and expansive living room glazing, creating a striking architectural expression. Innovative structural solutions address the site’s challenges, such as poor soil conditions and significant slopes, using shoring and helical piles for stability.

Energy-efficient features, including insulated concrete form walls and triple-glazed windows, further promote sustainability. Overall, the slice-house exemplifies a harmonious blend of modern design, ecological principles, and thoughtful integration with its natural surroundings, reflecting a commitment to creating bespoke, sustainable homes tailored to our clients’ needs.
