Blackhurst Cultural Centre

The Blackhurst Cultural Centre (BCC) – The People’s Residence is set to become a vibrant hub for arts and cultural programming, expanding its current space through a long-term lease from the City of Toronto. Located at 756 Bathurst Street, this historic building, part of the 1890s Mirvish Village redevelopment, requires significant renovation to modernize and address accessibility, safety, and energy efficiency while preserving its heritage craftsmanship and brickwork.

The project will transform the 5,400 sq. ft. structure into an 8,300 sq. ft. cultural center, adding new features such as a soundproof drumming studio, multipurpose community spaces, art galleries, a podcast room, and shared offices for cultural organizations. Key upgrades include restoring the heritage facade, installing new windows and skylights, improving mechanical and electrical systems, and making the building fully accessible with the addition of a passenger elevator and a green roof.

Architectural restoration includes maintaining the building’s original decorative elements like circular-arched windows, brick corbel tables, and a pressed metal cornice. The redevelopment will honor the heritage of the site and its connection to African and Caribbean Canadian culture, with plans for public events, performances, and workshops. The project also aligns with Mirvish Village’s broader restoration strategy and will include heritage interpretation panels celebrating the legacy of Toronto’s Black community.

The BCC will serve as a permanent home for cultural celebration, providing a dynamic space for community-led initiatives focused on learning, sharing, and honoring the stories of African and Caribbean Canadians.
