    Accessible Residential Units

Accommodation, Information and Support Inc. (AIS) is a not-for-profit organization that provides supportive housing, counselling and various community development and educational programs to people in Toronto affected by mental health challenges and the trauma associated with homelessness. On 2012, Ten-2-Four Architecture Inc. was engaged by AIS to provide two new accessible residential units as an addition to one of AIS’s existing residential buildings.

The scope of work for the 58 Lewis Street project is an example of AIS’ commitment to providing services for tenants who are mobility-challenged due to aging and also to improving accessibility to all common areas throughout their portfolio. The scope of work includes partial retrofit of existing half-basement level to convert it to a fully accessible multi-purpose community area with a Kitchen for the community nutrition programs, a laundry facility, and an accessible washroom. Work on the ground floor includes the addition of two self-contained accessible units complete with wheel-in prefabricated showers, fully barrier-free kitchen and appliances, and integrated access control AV system. A new entry to the multi-purpose area will house an accessibility lift as well as a convenience stair to the backyard. New accessible landscaping and new backyard Community Garden complete the scope of work for this project.
